Occasionally a book comes along that is so beautiful, so well-made, so priceless that it really does defy all description.
I could tell you about how the Night Circus weaves surreal magic and wonder together into a tapestry of black-and-white wonder. I could tell you how the characters are fascinating and wonderful and intelligent and delightful. I could tell you how atmospheric and enjoyable it truly is. I could try to explain how the author drops the reader into the circus so that the surreal magical place feels like a real thing.
Anything I say, will pale in comparison to the real thing.
On the surface the Night Circus is a bit of a Romeo and Juliet story with the subtle and mysterious magic of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Or it is half Something Wicked This Way Comes and half The Prestige. While those comparisons are true they don’t do justice to what Erin Morgenstern has accomplished with this novel.
The Night Circus is all those things together and wholly its own thing.
I will leave it at that because I can not describe it without diminishing it. I would recommend this book to everybody. Erin Morgenstern has written a novel that should be a classic of literature and you should read it. Tell your friends to read it. Pick it for your book club.
