Christmas Eve

Christmas lights and luminaries look beautiful together. They are nearly impossible to photograph together. The human eye has a truly astonishing dynamic range when it comes to deciphering optical signals. Dim candles shining through brown paper sacks can appear next to bright LEDs and our eyes can see them both.

Cameras, however have a harder time keeping both of them properly exposed at the same time. Either the luminaries are dim echoes of reality or the lights are bright white smudges of lost detail.

The secret is… I’m not sure. I’ll let you know when I figure it out.
