Lake Katherine in the Santa Fe mountains in northers New Mexico is one of the serene places in the world. Sometime in history God saw fit to push glaciers around the surface of the earth. If the only reason for doing so was to create places of such peace and beauty as this glacial lake set at inside a deep valley and surrounded by bald mountain peaks then it was all worth it.
The first night we stayed in the valley near the lake a thunderstorm swept in. The rain was exciting enough but the lightning struck so close that it lit up the inside of our tents brighter than midday and the thunder rolled deafeningly up and down the valley as the sound bounced acoustically off the rock walls and shook the ground, shivering droplets of water from the tent walls and leaving us breathless, sleepless and maybe a little bit terrified.
I would do it again.
