Chime

Chime

Wind chimes are surprisingly iconic for such simple machines driven by chaos. Perhaps it is the ability of tinkling bells to drive away evil spirits or it is simply the pleasant music of God’s creations but people seem to nearly universally love the sounds of wind chimes. Near my mother’s house is a tree that is littered with chimes, drooping and swaying from the branches. Loops, bars, small carved animals, made of metal wood and ceramic plastic they dangle and sway clinking together softly. Whenever a sharp breeze blows through they set up a cacophony of musical variation that would be fascinating to analyze as a sonic spectrum.
